A Log Home is primarily constructed with wood, a natural product which, if exposed unprotected to the elements will be destroyed.
If you walk thru the woods you find old trees with mold and fungi on them.
This microorganism destroys the wood in no time. If you don't protect your Log Home with the best available stain, if you don't caulk or chink the corners and connections, this will happen to your Log Home too.
It is very expensive, and almost impossible to remove and replace one log from the structure.
If we discover fungi or rot on your Log Home we will make some recommendations regarding how to stabilize or resolve the problem. Hopefully, it's not too late.
There are different companies on the market that are experts in the Log Home renovation.
But again, if fungi or rot is present, it will be costly.
We always hear the same question, "how many times do I have to stain or caulk my log home ?"
It all depends on the location, the climate, the species of wood and which materials were used in the past. This list can go on and on.
There are two kinds of stain available for your Log Home.
- water based
- oil based
Which one is better for your Log Home ?
It all depends on the age, the species of wood and how many times you stain your Log Home.
Water based stain creates a protective cover. If the log cracks, the cover has a crack too. If it's not renewed in time the water based stain will chip off.
If you did use a sealer on top, you'll have a difficult time with your next coat.
Oil based stain penetrates the surface. I personally prefer oil based stain.
Cedar is a little bit problematic because of its own natural oils. Not every stain will work with cedar wood.
Before you make a decision regarding what kind of stain or which color to use, you should try it on a leftover piece or in a corner were it's not visible right away. You will be surprised how many products look totally different than in the store.
Our Log Home, located in the Southern part of Colorado, is mostly exposed to excessive sunshine and dramatic temperature changes. We use high quality stain and caulk and the south-west side needs to be re-stained every year.
We tried different kinds of stain with a 10 or 15 year warranty. They failed - the same was true with caulk
